Motorcyclist thrown and killed in Raleigh wreck

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A motorcyclist died Thursday afternoon when a crash threw him into an oncoming car, according to Raleigh police.

Robert Earl Lyons, 44, of 6110 Ricker Rd., Raleigh, was pronounced dead at the scene, a Raleigh police crash report indicated. The wreck took place on Tryon Road near its intersection with South Wilmington Street.

Lyons was riding a 2000 Suzuki motorcycle east along Tryon Road when Wayne Curtis Hodges, 58, of 117 N. King Charles Rd., tried to turn left from a parking lot onto westbound Tryon Road, a path that took him in front of Lyons, the report said.

The motorcycle struck Hodges’ vehicle, a 1995 Honda passenger car, the report states. Lyons was speeding at the time, and the force of the crash threw him from his motorcycle and into an oncoming car, according to the report.

Police reported no one else was injured.
