RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – As North Carolina continues to experience wildfires in the western portion of the state, the Highway Patrol would like to remind motorists to exercise safe driving habits when traveling through smokey areas.

Although some roadways may not be directly in the fire’s path, the smoke that is produced can cause hazardous driving conditions.

“We will continue to provide assistance to those directly battling the fires until the mission is accomplished,” said Colonel Bill Grey, commander of the State Highway Patrol. “Our primary focus is to ensure the safety of each and every citizen.”

Motorists should follow these simple steps when driving in dense smoke:

· Plan ahead – Ensure enough time has been allotted to reach an intended destination safely.
· Increase Following Distances
· Monitor Speeds
· Activate Headlamps
· Use Low Beams and Fog Lights if Equipped
· Do not drive distracted

Motorists can obtain updated traffic information by visiting http://www.NCDOT.gov or by calling 511 from a mobile device. Those traveling from outside of North Carolina can call 1-877-511-4662.
