ROXBORO, N.C. (WNCN) — Roxboro Police Chief David L. Hess calls the shooting that killed Jalell Downey, senseless.
“A mother and father lost their son tonight to a senseless murder,” he said.
Authorities said Jalell Downey, 23 was shot and killed by Bennie Harris of Roxboro. Police responded to 1524 Pine Ridge Drive just before 10 p.m. Saturday night. When they arrived, they found Downey lying in the front yard of the residence.
Downey was transported to Person Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Investigators said the two men were arguing at the home of Harris when the shooting occurred, though it is unclear what the argument was about.
Investigators took Harris into custody a short time later.
“Violence is never the resolution to life’s problems,” said Hess. “Two families are forever changed from Saturday night’s senseless act. My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to both families.”
Harris is charged with first-degree murder. Other details of the case remain under investigation.
