WAKE FOREST, N.C. (WNCN) — Wake Forest police gave out nearly 1,000 turkeys to the needy this year.
Officers said between 200 and 300 people were lined up for the giveaway Monday morning. Some arrived at 5 a.m. for the 9 a.m. giveaway.
This is the 10th year of the giveaway, which has distributed almost 5,000 turkeys in all.
“I’m grateful it’s there,” said Marie Pearce, who received a turkey. Without it, she said, there’d be no Thanksgiving at her house.
“For 10 years the line’s been around the corner, so we started with 75 turkeys in 2007 and today we gave out 911, so we’re glad just to help out a little bit,” said Michael Sattler, a police detective.
The turkeys officers handed out were donated by people and vendors in the community, including 201 that were turned in on Saturday alone.
400 bags of sides, including potatoes and green beans, were donated by Living Word Family Church of Wake Forest.
