RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A Raleigh police officer and a suspect were shot during an incident at an apartment complex near Lake Johnson Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
The officer was being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries at Wake-Med. The suspect is in stable but critical condition at the same facility, city officials said.
The officer was released from the hospital Thursday.
Just before 2:45 p.m., officers responded to apartments on University Court off Lake Dam Road following a reported break-in.
An officer and a suspect were injured by gunfire during the incident, police said. Both were transported to WakeMed for treatment.
The SBI confirmed it was called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting and were on scene at the apartment complex.
People nearby said they heard what they thought was a gunshot.
“BOOM — I believe that’s a gunshot,” said Bin Liu who was home at the complex when the shooting happened.
The Raleigh Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative investigation along with a criminal investigation into the shooting.
The SBI will submit its findings to the Wake County District Attorney.
