HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Hillsborough is using parking tickets to gather food for the needy this holiday season.
Instead of paying the normal $10 fine, parking miscreants can turn in five canned or boxed food items to the town’s police department.
“It’s a nice way to sort of solve two issues,” said Hillsborough Police Chief Duane Hampton. “Let people resolve some unpaid tickets, while at the same time, really contributing to a community need.”
All of the food gathered will go to Orange Congregations in Mission.
“I hope [people] see it as a very positive thing,” Hampton said. “I hope they see it as an opportunity for us to take something kind of negative, you know like getting parking tickets, and turning it into something really more positive for the community.”
