Johnston County helps issue free IDs to veterans

SMITHFILED, N.C. (WNCN) – A new program is helping veterans take advantage of discounts at local businesses in Johnston County.

The Johnston County registrar of deeds now issuing free photo ID cards to veterans.

It’s called “Thank a Vet.”

Before this, they’d have to carry around their discharge documents.

They’re also archiving those documents for safekeeping.

The program started back on November 1 and the county says its already issued 305 of these ID cards.

Veterans say they’re grateful.

“I had two tours in Vietnam and neither one of them were recognized by anybody except family and a few friends and now the community is recognizing it. And that means a lot,” said veteran Rudy Baker.

Johnston isn’t the only county in the state offering the program but it is the only one in the Triangle.

Veterans can sign up at the register of deeds office.
