CONWAY, N.C. (WAVY) — A mother and her two children were killed Wednesday night in a trailer fire in Northampton County.
Chief Albert Vann with the Conway Volunteer Fire Department says a single wide trailer off of U.S. Route 258, near Pinetops Road, caught fire shortly before midnight. The scene of the fire is just south of Mufreesboro.
Vann says the fire was fully involved when crews arrived, and that three people were trapped inside.
Firefighters cut through the wall in an attempt to rescue the occupants — a 31-year-old mother, and her 2-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son.
All three were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WAVY that the mother killed is Sarah Vann.
WAVY confirmed with the ECU Brodie School of Medicine that the children are Saphira Vann, 2, and Chase Vann, 11.
Chief Vann says the fire appears to have been accidental. Officials are still working to determine what caused the fire.
A family member tells WAVY a dryer started the fire.
Crews from Conway, Woodland and Murfreesboro all responded to the scene. Getting the fire under control took between 30 and 45 minutes.
Chief Vann says the mother’s father, who lives next door, called in the fire.
Crisis counselors were made available to the firefighters who responded, Chief Vann says.
