DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Several businesses in Durham’s Ninth Street shopping district reported that they had been broken into recently.
Thieves got into offices, a hair salon and Awakening Herbs & Gifts, which was was one of the hardest-hit businesses in the popular shopping district. Owner Kathy Hall said a thief got away with $140 Wednesday night and the money that was taken from her will have a big impact on her small business.
“I came into work on Thursday morning and the door was broken,” she said.
On Friday, workers replaced the door and frame to her store. The door was damaged during a burglary sometime between when Hall closed her shop Wednesday night and when she came back Thursday morning.
“It’s scary to come and see that somebody has come in like that,” Hall said.
The thief didn’t take any of Hall’s merchandise – they went straight for the cash register for her money.
Hall just opened her store in April.
“I was just getting started, this is my first Christmas. It’s kind of a big blow that this happened in December,” she said.
“I’m concerned now about needing to pay for extra security,” she said. “That’s really going to be the expense. I’m concerned that someone felt comfortable coming in here once and got out, could come back.”
The burglary happened just as Durham police pointed out that there’s been an increase in robberies and people looking for easy money. Police said there has been a 13 percent increase from 2015 to the first 11 months of this year.
Hall said the loss is more than just $140.
“It hurts, and you know, this has ripple effects business-wise.”
