NC high school student shot to death by teen following argument, police say

KING, N.C. (WFMY) — A 17-year-old was shot and killed at an apartment complex on Pineview Drive in King Saturday afternoon.

King Police say Chanler Gilham died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Police charged 19-year-old Roger Dale Phillips III with murder.

Investigators say Gilham and Phillips knew each other and were in an ongoing argument before the shooting. Police say there is evidence of illegal drug activity in this case, but they are not releasing details on a motive for the shooting.

King Police say Gilham was a student at West Stokes High School and in the process of transferring to Meadowbrook Academy. They say he was well-liked by his peers.

Funeral arrangements are being made by the family through Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall.
