GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police say a man who fired three shots at one of their officers works for the FBI.
It happened around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday near the Planet Fitness, located at 3681 28th Street SE.
Officers were called to the scene after the suspect was seen with a firearm inside the gym. Authorities say the man shot at a police sergeant when he tried to speak with the suspect outside the business.
Officers arrested the 35-year-old suspect at gunpoint in The Orbit Room parking lot north of Centerpointe Mall. They recovered a handgun after his arrest.
Police said they’ve notified the FBI field office in Detroit. Ray Johnson, who is a supervisory special agent there, said the man arrested is a FBI special agent based out of the state.
Johnson said he could not comment on whether the agent was on duty when the shots were fired, what the agent was wearing or if the GRPD was aware the agent was in West Michigan.
Johnson released a statement saying:
The FBI takes allegations of misconduct very seriously. We are aware of the matter involving the recent arrest of an FBI Special Agent and are fully cooperating with the Grand Rapids Police Department. This matter has been referred to the FBI’s Internal investigations Section in Washington, DC, as well as the Department of Justice’s Office of Inspector General. Because this is an ongoing investigation, we will not comment further.
Grand Rapids Police Sgt. Terry Dixon called the incident “disturbing,” but said there were no injuries in the incident. Authorities said in a release that no shots were fired by police.
McCall Gosselin, vice president of public relations and communications for Planet Fitness, issued the following statement Tuesday afternoon:
We can confirm the isolated incident that took place early this morning at the Planet Fitness location in Grand Rapids. We can also confirm that no shots were fired inside the club, and that no one was injured. The suspect is currently in custody and we are grateful for the local authorities’ swift action and response. As this is an ongoing investigation, any further inquiries should be directed to the Grand Rapids Police Department.
GRPD’s Major Case Team is investigating the incident. Anyone with additional information is asked to call GRPD at (616) 456-3400 or Silent Observer at (616) 774-2345.
