PEMBROKE, N.C. (WBTW) – Officials say a former highway patrolman has died after a Tuesday morning house fire in Pembroke.
Robeson County Fire Marshal Stephanie Chavis says the fire was reported at 12:56 a.m. Prospect Fire Department, Burnt Swamp Fire Department and Pembroke Rural Fire Department responded along with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office’s arson and homicide divisions.
On arrival, fire crews say the single story brick house was fully involved. Chavis says the body of Michael Wayne Chavis, age 58, of Philadelphus Road in Pembroke was found inside his home after the fire was put out.
According to the county fire marshal, the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and the cause of death is pending autopsy findings.
Officials also said they have no reason to believe the fire was suspicious.
