APEX, N.C. (WNCN) — A gas leak shut down U.S. Highway 1 near Apex for about 45 minutes on Tuesday evening.

The gas leak was first reported just before 7 p.m. and closed U.S. 1 between N.C. Highway 1010 and N.C Highway 55, which is East Williams Street, Apex Police and the N.C. State Highway Patrol said.

Marco Drive and Scheiffelin Road were shut down for about 90 minutes, but have also reopened.

The gas leak was stopped around 8:35 p.m., but repairs on the damaged infrastructure will continue into early Wednesday, officials said.

A car crash initially caused the gas leak, according to officials.
