Vehicle hits elementary student exiting Cumberland County school bus

ROSEBORO, N.C. (WNCN) – An elementary school student exiting a school bus was hit by a vehicle Thursday afternoon in Roseboro, officials confirmed.

Her injuries are severe, but she is expected to recover.

The student from Beaver Dam Elementary School was getting off bus 932 around 2:45 p.m. on Highway 210 near Ingram Road when she was hit. The bus had its red flashing lights on and stop sign out at the stop.

A 2006 GMC pickup, operated by Aaron Bruce, 24, was traveling in the opposite direction and hit the girl.

Family identified the girl as Jeannie Sue Jernigan. She suffered injuries to her left arm and hand as well as right leg.

Her great uncle Harold Shirley said she was in “good spirits.”

Shirley serves as a volunteer firefighter who responded to the scene. He didn’t know until he got here that the call was for his great niece.

The girl was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Bruce has been charged with felony passing a stopped school bus.
