LELAND, N.C. (WECT) — Officials responded to the scene of a shooting in the Windsor Park community of Leland Friday evening that left an officer injured and killed the suspect.
According to Leland Police Department Lieutenant Jeremy Humphries, the officer who was shot was Jacob Schwenk, of the Leland Police Department, and the suspect was Brent Quinn.
According to District Attorney Jon David, officers responded to reports of a suspicious person on Bridgeport Way around 8:51 p.m.
Quinn died as a result of the shooting and an Schwenk was shot multiple times in the leg, according to District Attorney Jon David.
Schwenk is at New Hanover Regional Medical Center undergoing treatment. His bulletproof vest played a big role in saving his life.
“Its one the things that you train for and plan for in some cases but when it actually happens it’s still a shock,” said Leland Police Chief Mike James. “We are blessed and lucky and thankful that the officer is going to pull through. He is going to have a long recovery but he is alive.”
No word yet on how the shooting happened.
The officer’s injuries are not life-threatening according to Jon David.
Quinn lived in the Windsor Park community.
The State Bureau of Investigation is expected to investigate the shooting.
