ELON, N.C. (WFMY) — An Elon University student may have to have all of his toes and part of his foot amputated after a train ran over him, police say.

The accident happened at the tracks near Lebanon and Lee Street on Elon’s campus early Saturday morning.

Elon Assistant Police Chief James Perry said 21-year-old Ryan Lowe, from New Jersey, was trying to cross the tracks while the train was stopped.

Chief Perry said Lowe jumped between two of the train cars when the train slowly rolled backward. That’s when Lowe lost his balance and the train rolled over his foot.

Chief Perry said two of Lowe’s toes were instantly taken off.

Chief Perry said an EMT applied a tourniquet to Lowe’s foot until an ambulance arrived and took him to Moses Cone Hospital.
