Man using walker to cross street is hit by SUV, killed in Moore County

ABERDEEN, N.C. (WNCN) — A 55-year-old Aberdeen man died at the scene of a crash after being hit by an SUV while crossing U.S. Highway 1 Monday evening.

The incident happened just after 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Magnolia Drive in Aberdeen when the man was crossing the busy highway with a walker, the Aberdeen Times reported

Officials later said Joseph Dwayne Schoolcraft of the 200 block of Pecan Lane died in the incident.

Both southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 in Aberdeen were closed for an extended time period while the accident was investigated.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene  and was being interviewed by law enforcement officers.

The victim’s identification has not been released pending notification of family members.

Responding to the crash were units with Aberdeen Fire and Rescue, Moore County EMS, NC State Medical Examiner’s Office, Aberdeen Police Department and the NC State Highway Patrol.
