RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A 25-year-old woman faces several charges after Raleigh police said she hit and killed a cyclist on Western Boulevard.
Around midnight, Bryan Scott Goforth, 56, was riding his bike in the crosswalk near Western’s intersection with Hillsborough Street when he was hit by a 1996 Buick sedan.
The driver of that vehicle, later identified as Amy Ellen Franklin, fled the scene.
Goforth was pronounced dead at the scene. Franklin’s vehicle was traveling at 45 mph at the time of impact, according to a police report. No tire impressions found on the pavement at the scene of the collision.
“He’s just laying there. This guy’s done,” a caller told 911 dispatch. “It’s over, man. I’m telling you.”
The caller said he was standing over the Goforth to protect him from traffic.
About an hour after the collision, officers pulled over Franklin near the intersection of Cross Link and Hadley roads.
She was arrested on charges of texting while driving, driving with having an open container of alcohol, felony hit and run, felony death by motor vehicle, and DWI.
All westbound lanes of Western Boulevard were closed near Powell Drive following the collision. They reopened just before 5 a.m.
