Hundreds lost power Thursday; utility says Matthew could be to blame

RAEFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — Several hundred people lost power Thursday afternoon in the area of Raeford.

Lumbee River Electric Membership Corporation attributed the disruption to an equipment failure. A lightning arrester was part of the problem, spokesman Walter White said. It’s possible the arrester was damaged during Hurricane Matthew and the damage has only now manifested, he said. There was also a branch on the line that might have contributed to the problem he said.

White said at 7:30 p.m. that crews were expected to finish restoring power shortly.
