Gas line struck in Durham

(Derrick Lewis | CBS North Carolina)

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Construction equipment struck a 4-inch gas line near the intersection of Alston and Angier avenues in Durham about 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Apartments in the area were evacuated, and Alston Avenue was closed while crews addressed the gas leak.

About 2:15 p.m., fire officials announced that the lake was shut off, area roads had reopened and the evacuation order had been lifted.

Workers in the area were working on a multi-year, $39 million expansion of Alston Avenue.
