SANFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — A church van overturned in Sanford on Friday evening, police confirmed, sending 12 people to the hospital, including two who were airlifted in critical condition.
The van was traveling on the northbound side of U.S. 1 in Sanford when it was rear-ended by another vehicle, causing it to overturn and go into the median, police said.
The wreck happened at 8:36 p.m. between the Wicker Street and Spring Lane exits.
Eleven people were in the van, and one was in the other vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle and one person from the van were airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. The other 10 people from the van were taken to the hospital by ambulance.
It wasn’t immediately clear which church the van is from. No young children were involved in the crash, police confirmed.
