Phillips was pinned in his Ford Explorer after running off the road and hitting a tree in Moore County around 7 a.m. Thursday, according to the Aberdeen Times.

Emergency crews spent nearly an hour trying to cut the 17-year-old from his SUV. The Explorer’s roof and door were cut from the vehicle before crews used chains and hydraulic-powered rescue tools to pull the dash of the vehicle off of Phillips, the Aberdeen Times reported.

The teen was taken from the scene by ambulance and then loaded onto a helicopter to be airlifted. He later died at a local trauma center.

Phillips was a junior at Chatham Central High School, Chatham County school officials confirmed late on Thursday.

Grief counselors were at the school Thursday and will be there again today.
