HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Traffic was backed up at least two miles for more than an hour Saturday afternoon after part of Interstate 40 west was closed near Hillsborough.

The wreck was first reported around 4:40 p.m. two miles west of exit 270, which is U.S. 501/Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said.

Initially, both lanes were closed, but after about 10 minutes, the left lane reopened.

Traffic was backed up nearly to N.C. 86. The road, except for the shoulder, reopened around 5:30 p.m.

Officials said they expect the highway to completely reopen by 6:35 p.m.
