RICHMOND, Va. (WNCN) — Virginia wildlife officials are asking for tips about the poaching of two mature bull elk during the week of Nov. 19 to 24.
One was killed in the Guest River area of Wise County, near Norton. The other was shot in the Warfork area of Buchanon County.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is working with Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Southwest Virginia Sportsmen’s Association, to restore the elk population in historical ranges in Virginia.
In a news release, the DGIF called poaching a “critical threat” to restoration efforts.
Investigators are asking anyone with information on the killings to call them at 1 (800) 237-5712 or by email at WildCrime@dgif.virginia.gov.
Callers can remain anonymous, but are asked to leave their name and contact information. There is the possibility of a reward, officials said.
