FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) – A man interrupted a sexual assault in Fayetteville on Thursday, capturing the assailant, police said.
The incident happened about 9 p.m. in the Old Wilmington Road corridor in downtown Fayetteville, according to authorities.
The man who intervened was a friend of the victim, police said.
“A friend of the victim was concerned for her safety as he had not been in recent contact with her and proceeded to check on her at the residence,” police wrote.
The man “heard the victim yelling for help,” which prompted him to burst through the door, according to police.
“The friend interrupted the sexual assault and was able to keep the suspect at bay until police officers arrived,” police wrote.
Police identified the attacker as Raymond Brewington, 47. He knew the victim, and was at her house when he began to sexually assault her, police said.
Brewington is charged with two counts of second-degree sexual offense. He’s being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center on a $250,000 secured bond.
