OCRACOKE, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say state Highway 12 has reopened on Ocracoke Island and most ferry service has resumed on the North Carolina Outer Banks.
Heavy rain, rough seas, and coastal flooding all combined Saturday to close the road and erode beaches along the barrier island.
The Department of Transportation says Highway 12 reopened Sunday morning, allowing access to the ferry terminal to get off Ocracoke Island. Officials had shut down the ferry route for a day.
Authorities say a few other less traveled ferry routes remain closed because of the weather and flooding including the Pamlico River ferry and the Cherry Branch route.
